I Introduction
David had been anointed king of Israel. However, Saul who was still in power sought several times to kill him. This forced David to run for his life. At this point in 1 Samuel 22:1-4, he had run for his life and hid in the cave of Adullam.
II. People who came to him
1. Those in debt
2. Those in distress
3. Those who were discontented.
They all gathered to him and he became their commander.
III. Mighty warriors of David
In 2 Samuel 23:8ff, we see the same men who were in debt, in distress and discontented becoming mighty warriors for David.
1. Josheb raised his spear against 800 men whom he killed in one encounter.
2. Eleazar stood firm and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword.
3. Shammah struck the Philistines down and the Lord brought about great victory.
4. 3 men (warriors) broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well and brought to David.
5. Abishai raised his spear against 300 men whom he killed.
6. Benaiah a fighter struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors, struck down a huge Egyptian with his own spear and killed a lion.
IV. Paul
In Colossians 4: 7-14, Paul mentions people who added value to his life and ministry.
1. Tychicus a dear brother, faithful minister and fellow servant of the Lord.
2. Onesmus a faithful and dear brother.
3. Aristarchus “my fellow prisoner”.
4. Mark, Barnabas and Justus the only Jews among Paul’s co-workers for the kingdom of God who proved a comfort to Paul.
5. Epaphras a servant of Jesus Christ.
6. Luke, a dear friend and doctor (2 Timothy 4:11, “Luke only is with me”)
7. Nympha who had a church in her house
8. Archipus who had a ministry that was to be completed.
V. Application steps
1. Be Fearless: life is full of risks and every decision or step you make will require courage.
2. Ask for help: when necessary, ask for help especially from someone who can share knowledge, wisdom, experience, or valuable connections.
3. Stay humble: if you experience few early successes do not let success go to your head because it will prevent you from reaching higher levels.
4. Stay positive: learn to turn your setbacks into success without blaming yourself or others.
Conclusion
Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin (Zechariah 4:10) and see it grow. Amen!
